Truck drivers can earn a good income and jobs are in demand. The trucking industry continues to grow as consumers shop online more than ever before. You can launch a new, rewarding career in just a few short weeks. There are a lot of job opportunities for new truckers with no experience.

Not all truck driving jobs require for you to be away from home for long periods of time. There are many different kinds of jobs available to truckers including short haul, city, and regional jobs that tend to have more traditional schedules.

CDL DEFINED

A CDL is a commercial driver’s license which is required to drive vehicles such as semi-trucks, tractor trailers, and buses. There are several types of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) that require a CDL. Endorsements qualify people to drive additional specialty vehicles. A CDL is required to start a rewarding career in truck driving.

Drivers can obtain a class A, B, or C CDL. Class A is the most widely obtained CDL, as it allows you to drive the widest variety of vehicles including B and C vehicles. Drivers with a Class A license can operate semi-trucks, double and triple tractor trailers, flatbeds, livestock carriers, passenger vehicles (16 or more passengers including the driver), buses, and more.
CDL JOBS

In addition to driving semi-trucks, flatbeds, livestock carriers, tank vehicles, and more, CDL holders can drive straight or box trucks, dump trucks, deliver packages, large passenger buses or segmented buses, drive for the city transit, and drive school buses. Both short (driving window of 12 hours or less) and long-haul jobs are available.
EARNING POTENTIAL

The earning potential for truck drivers is high and benefits are good. In 2021 the average salary for truck drivers in Alabama was $46,350 and wages typically go up to $64,050, according to Career Explorer*. Many truckers get endorsements such as hazmat so they can earn a higher salary.
CDL REQUIREMENTS
Must be 18 years of age

Have a valid Alabama driver’s license

Possess a current D.O.T.

Provide documented proof of identity

Have a valid commercial learner’s permit

PREMITS AND TESTING

The Alabama commercial learner’s permit (CLP) consists of 3 sections: general knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicles test. You can take the Alabama CDL permit test as many times as you need to, however, one application has only 3 attempts at the exam.

The CDL test consists of 3 parts: Pre-Trip Inspection, Basic Control Skills, and an on-road test. If you do not pass, you can retake your CDL test up to three times with the same permit.

CURRICULUM

Students are educated through a hybrid program of online learning, classroom and behind the wheel instruction. They will prepare for the written and road test and gain valuable hands-on experience driving a semi-tractor trailer. For total possible student preparedness, we incorporate principles of professional etiquette into our instruction as it’s an important skillset for career readiness.

FELONIES AND CONVICTIONS

Drivers with a troubled past will face more obstacles when trying to land a job, but with time, patience and effort, most are able to find a company willing to give them a chance. Drivers with criminal records, felonies, and/or DUI-DWI convictions, usually have to wait a specific period of time after the conviction before companies will hire them. Company policies vary.
